Free Popcorn and A Movie Miracle
When courage, sound, and story aligned to crack open
a place I was ready to heal.
What if all it took to overcome a lifelong fear… was free popcorn and a movie?
Ever had one of those surprising aha moments—when something so ordinary suddenly flips the switch, and everything changes? When the key turns in the lock, the breath catches in your throat, and the puzzle pieces fall into place without warning?
That’s what happened to me at a pre-release movie screening recently. There I was—gift card in hand, popcorn on my lap—expecting nothing more than a night out. But instead, I walked away with a healing I didn’t even know I was ready for.
Heroines on the Edge
In the film, the heroine stood alone in the darkness, high on a sharp desert ridge. One step forward, and she might plummet. But she chose to move anyway.
Inhale. Suspend the breath. Exhale.
And then—she stepped. Courage in motion.
It brought me back to another memory—another leap of faith. Highest waterfall drop allowed in New Zealand. One in which I was at the highest tower in Auckland, New Zealand. A rope and harness was my only safety. My heart pounded as I watched from my seat. A leap of faith. When she landed safely, the entire theater seemed to exhale with her.
And in that collective breath, something inside me shifted.
Where Fear Begins
My fear of heights has been with me as long as I can remember. As a little girl, I watched my dad— a structural engineer—leap casually from beam to beam during the construction of many of Miami Beach’s iconic hotels. No rope. No harness. No safety net. My child’s heart screamed: Will he fall and leave me behind?
There were “topping parties” at the highest points of the buildings, but to me, they were moments of terror. Ladders instead of stairs. No railings. Just wind, height, and the quiet thrum of panic. Up was fine… but coming down? My legs would freeze. I couldn’t move.
That paralyzing childhood fear came rushing back as I watched the heroine of the film. But then—just as suddenly—it melted away. As if that scene on screen flipped the switch, and fear finally let go.
Fear Is a Choice
That night, more than one fear was left behind.
I drove to the theater alone in torrential rain and hail—something I once avoided at all costs.
I sat solo in a theater, something else I once feared would feel too lonely.
And then I watched my own story reflected back at me in a new light.
What if it’s that easy? What if fear is just a choice waiting to be unchosen?
A popcorn-and-movie kind of miracle? Maybe.
Or maybe the resonance of energy, courage, and sound—on screen and in soul—cracked open a place I was ready to heal.
Sound, Courage, and the Path Ahead
This fall, my nephew is getting married on a mountaintop. The gondola ride up used to be my nightmare. But now? I’m excited. I’ll ride to the top with some trepidation I’m sure, however this time I will go with trust, and breathe in the view and experience what is mine to claim.
That’s what healing feels like. Unexpected. Simple. Profound.
Sometimes fear is loud. Sometimes it's a whisper. Sometimes, it hides behind habits or old stories in the shadow.
And sometimes… it unravels in a moment of stillness, sound, or grace.
I believe healing doesn’t have to be hard.
It can come through your breath. Through vibration. Through the gentle wash of a singing bowl or a chime on the wind.
Through a story, or a tone, or a soft whisper reminding us that we are safe and you are never alone.
Is there a fear, big or sniggly, that’s been hitch-hiking a ride in your life? Are you ready to release it?
Sound helps you shift. Love is the voice that guides you.
And always remember… I love you so much.
